This is a story about a boat and a dream
This is a story about a boat and a dream. So first its all about the boat.
The boat is a Columbie 451 Ketch produced in a small boat yard in denmark on an island called Møn, go there if You ever come by, and there are only made 84 of this type, this one has hull number 24 and is ketch rigged.
The Columbie 451 is equipped with a finn keel. The finn keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.
The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed. Columbie 451 can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 2.00 – 2.10 meter (6.56 – 6.86 ft) dependent on the load.
Both the hull and the deck is made of hand laid fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of hand laid fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.
The hull is a double hull which improves the indoor climate. Especially when the water is colder than the air in the cabin, then the double hull insulates against cold water and reduce the condense water in the cabin.
The deck is a double deck which improves the indoor climate.
